Two Systems, One Key
On 2005–2016 cars the immobilizer transponder (engine start) and the RF remote (locks) are independent systems — a fob that unlocks the doors may still not start the car, and vice versa. Used fobs must be professionally unlocked before they can ever be programmed, and dealers won’t touch them. The Ford Years: A Volvo Key in a Tuxedo
2004–2008 DB9s and 2005–2016 V8 Vantages come from Aston’s Ford era, and their keys show it — the transmitter is literally a Volvo-family unit (US remotes carry FCC OHT7003186, 315 MHz). More important for troubleshooting: these cars run two independent systems — an immobilizer transponder that lets the engine start, and a separate RF remote for the locks. A fob that unlocks the doors but won’t start the car (or the reverse) isn’t broken; it’s half-programmed. We diagnose which half and fix that one.
The Crystal ECU Key and the New Era
From 2009 the DBS, DB9 and Rapide moved to the glass “Emotional Control Unit” key — beautiful, expensive, and programmable only with Aston-specific diagnostic tooling. The 2017+ cars (DB11, new Vantage, DBX) use Mercedes-derived electronics. On both, our first job is honest triage by VIN: some situations are solvable at your location, some genuinely need dealer software, and you deserve to know which before spending anything.
