VATS and PassLock — Old GM Security, Modern Fixes
No Oldsmobile uses a chip inside the key. Instead, older models use VATS — a visible resistor pellet on the key blade in one of 15 values that must be measured and matched exactly — and later models use PassLock, where the sensor sits in the ignition cylinder and a failing sensor strands the car even with a perfect key. VATS: The Resistor Pellet That Outlived the Brand
Older Oldsmobiles — Toronado, Aurora, the Eighty-Eight and Ninety-Eight families — use GM’s VATS/PassKey system: a visible resistor pellet embedded in the key blade, in one of fifteen distinct values. The car measures that resistance through the lock cylinder; wrong value, no start — and the system locks you out for several minutes after each wrong try. PassLock: The Plain Key That Isn’t Simple
Later Oldsmobiles (Alero, Intrigue, second-gen Aurora, Bravada) went the other way — a plain metal key with the security sensor hidden in the ignition cylinder. When an Alero cranks-and-dies with the security light on, the fix is a PassLock relearn or cylinder service, not a new key. We carry out both at your curb, and we’re honest about which one your car actually needs.
Orphan-Brand Reality
Oldsmobile ended in 2004; dealer key support effectively ended with it. What’s left is exactly our kind of work: code-cut fresh keys for worn locks, decoded VATS pellets, PassLock repairs, and keyless-entry remotes for the models that had them.
