Why Ram Keys Require Professional Programming
Ram trucks have used four different key systems in the last two decades: classic transponder keys (Texas 4D64, then Philips ID46), the Chrysler fobik key that inserts into a WIN ignition module, and today’s push-to-start smart proximity keys running Hitag AES (4A) encryption. Every one of them must be programmed to the truck’s immobilizer with professional equipment — a hardware-store copy will turn the locks but will never start the engine. Our mobile units carry the tools for every Ram generation, including all-keys-lost programming by VIN.
Ram 1500, Classic & Heavy Duty — Know Which Key You Need
Since 2019 the same model year covers three different keys: the new-generation Ram 1500 (DT) uses the OHT-4882056 smart proximity fob; the Ram 1500 Classic (the carried-over DS body) still uses the GQ4-53T fobik; and the 2500/3500/4500/5500 Heavy Duty trucks use the GQ4-76T smart key. They are not interchangeable — we confirm the right part by VIN before we roll out, so the key in the technician’s hand is the key that starts your truck. ProMaster vans are Fiat-platform and use their own flip keys, which we also cut and program.

Ram 1500 (2019–2024): The OHT-4882056 Smart Key
The current-generation Ram 1500 uses a 433 MHz proximity fob running Hitag AES (4A) encryption, sold in 5- and 6-button versions — remote start, power tailgate, and on air-suspension trucks a lower/raise function. It carries a hidden emergency blade for the driver’s door. We stock these fobs, cut the emergency insert, and program them at your truck, including all-keys-lost from the VIN with proof of ownership. If your truck is a TRX or a higher trim, tell us — button count matters when we pick the part.
Ram 1500 Classic: Same Year, Completely Different Key
Ram kept selling the previous-generation 1500 as the “Classic” alongside the new truck through 2024 — and it kept the old GQ4-53T fobik (ID46 chip). Two 2021 Ram 1500s in the same parking lot can need entirely different keys, chips, and programming procedures. The fobik inserts into the dash-mounted ignition node; when the nose of a fobik wears, trucks develop the classic “key won’t turn” or intermittent no-start — often fixed with a fresh programmed fobik rather than an ignition repair.
Heavy Duty 2500–5500 and ProMaster
2019+ HD trucks (2500/3500/4500/5500) use the GQ4-76T smart key — same 4A encryption family as the 1500 but a different part that will not cross over. Work trucks are our specialty: we come to the job site, and we cut and program fleet spares in one visit. The ProMaster vans are Fiat-platform underneath — different flip keys, different blades — and we service those too, which matters if you run a mixed delivery fleet.
Common Ram Key Problems We Fix
- Fobik won’t turn / truck says “key not detected” — worn fobik or failing ignition node; we diagnose which before you buy parts.
- Dead smart-fob battery — hold the fob nose against the start button to start the truck, then let us check whether the fob or just the cell is failing.
- Bought a fob online that won’t program — common with used 4A fobs; many can’t be reused. We supply tested parts or check yours before you waste the visit.
- One key for a work truck — the most expensive key is the one you don’t have. Spares cost a fraction of an all-keys-lost call.
Ram Key FAQ
I lost the only key to my Ram. Do I have to tow it to the dealer?
No. We generate new keys from the VIN at your location — fobik or smart key — with proof of ownership. The truck doesn’t move.
Why does my 2020 Ram use a different key than my neighbor’s 2020 Ram?
Because Ram sold two 1500s at once: the new-body truck (smart key) and the Classic (fobik). Same badge, same year, different systems — we confirm by VIN so the right part shows up.
Can you add remote start to my key?
If your truck shipped with factory remote start, we can program a factory-style fob with the button. We don’t retrofit remote-start hardware the truck never had.
Do you do Ram fleet keys?
Yes — HD trucks and ProMaster vans at your yard or site, multiple keys in one visit. Call (214) 717-6398 and tell dispatch it’s a fleet job.
