Step 1: Don’t Tow It to the Dealer (Yet)
The reflex is to call the dealership, but a dealer typically needs the car brought to them, may need to order the key, and books you into their service schedule. A mobile locksmith reverses the equation: the equipment comes to the car. For most makes and models, an all-keys-lost job is done on the spot.
Step 2: Gather Three Things
- Photo ID — proof of ownership is required (that protects you).
- Registration or insurance card — either works, and it’s usually in the glovebox; we can retrieve it after opening the vehicle.
- Your VIN — visible through the windshield on the driver’s side. With the VIN we can determine the exact key blank, cut code, and programming procedure before we arrive.
Step 3: The On-Site Process
The technician opens the car damage-free if it’s locked, cuts a new blade from the factory code, and programs the transponder or smart fob to the immobilizer. Older vehicles with basic metal keys skip the programming entirely. How to Never Do This Again
